Biggest Misconception about a Scrum Master?

Myth-Busting the Scrum Master Role

Let’s set the Scrum Master record straight.  🚫

One of the most common myths I’ve encountered?

Well, it’s got to be that a Scrum Master is some kind of omnipotent ‘order giver’. 📢

No Control Tower Here!

The misconception is that the Scrum Master is always in control, directing, and commanding.  But that’s so off the mark!

Contrary to popular belief, a Scrum Master isn’t the controller of all.  🚦

Reality Check

In the true spirit of Agile, a Scrum Master doesn’t actually have any inherent authority within the context of the team.  Yep, you read that right.

In fact, they ideally wield zero authority within the team.  ➡️

A surprise?  It might be too many.

Even more so, a truly aligned team selects their Scrum Master.

From Servant to Leader

This brings me to the crux of the role.  Let’s set the record straight: a Scrum Master is a ‘servant-leader’.

What does that mean?

It means they’re a leader who passionately serves the team, not above them.

Debunking the Myths

To anyone who thinks Scrum Masters are waiting on tenterhooks for status updates or that their core duty is to write reports – it is time for a wake-up call!

They aren’t the ones you should rush to with status updates or for report writing – honestly.  Such tasks are so distant from what being a true Scrum Master entails.
