Should UX be part of the Scrum Team?

UX/CX plays a critical role in successful product development. Participants explore Professional Scrum and Lean UX through a unique blend of self-paced learning, live classroom hands-on activity-based exercises, and community-based aftercare.

Throughout the class and between sessions, students leverage Lean UX techniques focusing on the core design and research activities that illustrate how they come together with development and delivery. Attendees explore how these activities fit into a dual-track agile process (Design and Development) where cross-functional teams can work together to explore, experiment and deliver value-based outcomes.

After the class, they get to connect with peers and thought leaders to empirically and incrementally develop their skills in collaborative Lean UX.

The course also includes a complimentary attempt at the globally recognized Professional Scrum with UX I (PSU I) certification exam.

This course is generally delivered over two consecutive days when offered in person. However, when offered as a Live Virtual Class, the course may be broken up into more, shorter days.

Learning Objectives

Students will leave the class understanding:

  • Gain a common understanding of what is meant by Professional Scrum
  • Dispel many myths about User Experience and its relationship to Agile and Scrum
  • Experience how the UX mindset and the Scrum framework complement, align, and integrate
  • Learn the advantages of thinking of work as problems to solve, and the Business Problem Statement’s role in this
  • Understand how the Scrum Team can connect more closely with end-users and customers
  • Understand how “easily” and “quickly” we can do product development and include UX
  • Learn the advantages of thinking of work as problems to solve, and how Business Problem Statements can frame the discussion
  • Learn common patterns for employing UX practices within a Sprint and within a cross-functional team that includes UX Professionals
  • Learn how to plan and balance both discovery and delivery work
  • Leave with some UX techniques that can be accomplished within the Scrum Team
  • Understand how anyone on the Scrum Team can support UX practices in support of the product
  • Focus on outcomes and impacts over outputs
  • Embrace the need to release and use measurements to validate outcomes
  • Realize the importance of incorporating UX work as part of the Product Backlog
  • Learn the value of testing hypotheses with experiments
  • Understand how to design experiments to be as low-cost, low-risk as possible, and how to make them “ride the Truth Curve” as you increase investment
Who should attend?
  • Scrum Masters and Product Owners will learn how to integrate the UX speciality with what they already know about the power of self-organizing cross-functional teams. This will enable them to help Developers to learn about the customer, plan learning/discovery/design work, and still deliver a “Done” increment each Sprint. In addition, Scrum Masters will learn how to incorporate product discovery techniques into Sprints and how to balance the product discovery work with the product delivery work while Product Owners will learn product discovery techniques that User Experience Designers use to better understand the needs of the user.
  • UX Professionals struggling to integrate on a Scrum Team will learn how to work more effectively inside Scrum, managing work in Sprints and visualizing it in the Product Backlog.
  • People who have learned about Lean UX and want to learn how to integrate those concepts into Professional Scrum working together in a unified Scrum Team.

Learning Experience

Flipped Learning Experience

Flipped Learning Experience

Flipped learning is an alternative format that moves some or all of the learning of theory away from the classroom, and reflecting and practising is done in the class (hence the name "Flipped Learning").

Benefits of flipped learning

  • Consuming content in smaller iterations helps learning stick
  • Multiple reflection cycles make the practical application of learning more impactful
  • Variations of learning environment cater better for personal learning styles
  • Continued access to learning materials

Flipped Learning Experience Overview

This class comes with 16 hours of live virtual classroom experience. The course content is divided into learning blocks, each with presentations and lectures in the form of videos, reading material, and writing activities that are provided for self-study complemented by 1/2 day live virtual sessions delivered online using Microsoft Teams and Mural. These live interactive workshops create a dynamic and interactive environment where we dive into the core concepts of ux through group activities, interactions, and sharing experiences, all with the guidance of an expert Professional Scrum Trainer.

Obtaining new knowledge through self-study materials along with having an in-depth, rich engagement in a class allows students to enjoy learning that sticks. Students will complete the course ready to take the globally recognised Professional Scrum with UX I certification exam which is included in the course fee.

Student will leave this course with an application for Professional Scrum.

Prerequisites

  • Computer - Your computer will need to be fast enough to run both Microsoft Teams and Mural. We recommend 2 monitors so that you can see everyone and the work easily.
  • Webcam - Please consider your staging and presence; what others see when you are on video. Try to avoid backlighting that renders you in shadow, the up-nostril, the baldie, or the half-head. 80% of human communication comes from body language and other visual queues. Consider your camera angles and try to have a view that is as close to what you would expect in person across a table.
  • Internet - We recommend a strong internet to support high fidelity video both from you and with us.

Supporting people with disabilities

We do our best to support people with disabilities. Please ask us about what we can do. Closed Captioning - For persons who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, live captions allow to see what others are saying. Class Recording - A meeting recording can be helpful for people with cognitive difficulties, for example. You can go through the recording at your own pace as well as go back to double-check anything you might have missed.

Students will leave the class understanding how to reconcile UX work with Scrum essentials like the Definition of “Done”, Backlog ordering and delivering “Done” Increments every Sprint.  You will learn how to handle design work that may extend beyond a single Sprint, continuing to deliver value each and every Sprint using Scrum. Professional Scrum with User Experience is excellent training for everyone who works on a product team (engineers, product managers, etc): technology teams work better when they’re collaborating across disciplines and specialities. But different priorities, types of work, and the specific working rhythms of each discipline can create silos on teams and inside organizations. Learn how to use the Scrum framework and UX techniques to align your team, focus on value, and foster collaboration. View the different Focus Areas covered within this class and others.
