Scrumorg-Course-APS-400x-1

Working together in Scrum Teams

Enables all members of the Scrum Team to learn Scrum while doing it, experiencing what it is like to deliver products using the Scrum framework

Course Overview

Applying Professional Scrum (APS) enables students to experience how professional Scrum and the Scrum framework improve their ability to deliver value compared to traditional methods. Scrum provides a better way of working that highlights experimentation, incremental delivery of customer value, frequent feedback loops and the fostering of strong team dynamics.

The APS is the first course recommended in the Professional Scrum series for Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and Agile Leaders and can be delivered in various formats to support a better learning experience:

  • As an immersive experience consisting of ten weekly 4-hour sessions – This format allows students to practice assignments in the intervening weeks and bring actionable and specific questions from their experiences to the debrief as part of the following session.
  • As a flipped learning experience consisting of four 4-hour sessions – These sessions are delivered consecutively within the same week and include additional self-paced reading and exercises.
  • As the traditional two full-day class.

Unique to the Applying Professional Scrum (APS) is the introduction of a series of practical Sprints that allow students to experience what it’s like to use Scrum and how different team behaviours impact on the outcomes. By default, we use a unique case study to learn Scrum with Minecraft Education Edition.

The course includes two free attempts at the globally recognized Professional Scrum Master I certification exam (PSM I).

Learning Experience Options

Our primary method of increasing Scrum for teams knowledge is a deliberate developmental experience divided into learning blocks, each with four hours of live virtual classroom training with a qualified trainer-practitioner complemented with presentations and lectures in the form of videos, reading material, and writing activities provided for self-study. Live sessions are delivered online using Microsoft Teams and Mural, with Mighty Networks provides the self-study portal.

Every participant on every option receives:

  • Two attempts at the industry-recognised Scrum.org Assessments.
  • A 30m learning review, generally delivered between assessment attempts.
  • A 60m one-on-one coaching session

At a minimum, we deliver the Professional Scrum Master over 4 ½ days (16 hours). We can provide this over four intensive consecutive days in one wee or four non-consecutive days over two weeks.

Each of the four 210-minute sessions included a 70m Sprint within which the participants can practice in a safe space to experiment and learn:

  • Session 1: Fundamentals of Scrum & Sprint 1
  • Session 2: Exploring the Scrum Framework & Sprint 2
  • Session 3: Deeper into Scrum & Sprint 3
  • Session 4: Planning, Getting Started, & Sprint 4

Although several case studies are available on request, we primarily recommend the Minecraft Campsite case study as it provides the best experience for students and more connections to the way they work currently. Practice Scrum in the complex and chaotic environment of Minecraft to experience the high-variance world of complex product development. We use Minecraft for Education to bring complexity to life in a scenario that everyone can experience regardless of their technical ability.

In addition to #1 and to better connect the participants to the material on the APS, we deliver the course as an immersive 10-week interactive activity-based course over ten sessions of 4 hours. At the end of each session, participants are given assignments to practice and experience their day-to-day roles. With the instructor-practitioner, participants debrief assignments at the beginning of the group’s next session.

  • Professionals that don’t use Scrum directly but want to learn how to work with colleagues that do use Scrum.
  • Professionals that are investigating to see if Scrum makes sense for them and their colleagues.

The course also provides the foundational Scrum knowledge needed for those wishing to continue their education with role-focused (Scrum Master, Product Owner, Developer, Leader) training classes. APS is not recommended for advanced Scrum professionals. This course is designed to be domain-agnostic; it conveys the use of Scrum in any domain or industry with complex problems to solve. Trainers typically have experience in multiple industries and may be able to tailor the course to the needs of your team. Students and teams building software products may want to consider our domain-specific course: Applying Professional Scrum for Software Development (APS-SD) with Certification.

Attendees make the most of the class if they:

  • Have studied the Scrum Guide (required)
  • Have passed the Scrum Open assessment
  • Have been closely involved or have a high interest in a project that builds or enhances a product or application.

All participants completing the Applying Professional Scrum (APS) with Certification course will receive a password to attempt the Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) assessment. The industry-recognized PSM I certification requires a minimum passing score of 85%. APS class participants who attempt the PSM I assessment within 14 days of receiving their free password and do not score at least 85% will be granted a 2nd attempt at no additional cost. You are also entitled to a discount on the PSM II assessment once passing PSM I.
