Transform Your Team’s Skills: The Power of Immersive Learning in the Workplace

When it comes to enhancing entry-level capabilities in the workplace, I’ve found that immersive learning experiences truly change the game. In my experience, traditional training methods often fall short. We typically find ourselves in a two-day training class, inundated with theory that feels disconnected from the realities of our jobs. This approach can lead to what I call “single loop learning,” where participants absorb content but struggle to apply it effectively in their day-to-day roles.

The Shift to Immersive Learning

Immersive learning flips this model on its head. Instead of drowning in theory, we focus on a small amount of content that participants can immediately apply. Over the course of five to seven days, learners are given the opportunity to explore how to implement these concepts within their own organisations. This hands-on approach allows them to confront real-world challenges head-on.

Here’s what I’ve observed about the benefits of immersive learning:

  • Real-World Application: Participants can directly connect what they learn to their work environment. They encounter roadblocks, questions, and challenges that arise in their specific contexts.
  • Feedback Loops: The immersive programme encourages a feedback loop where learners can return to the group to discuss their experiences. This is where the magic happens—participants engage in “double loop learning,” reflecting on their experiences and collaboratively solving problems.
  • Challenging Stubborn Ideas: It’s not uncommon for individuals to cling to the phrase, “This is how I’ve always done it.” Immersive learning creates a safe space for challenging these entrenched beliefs, fostering a culture of openness and adaptability.

The Role of Coaching and Consulting

One of the standout features of our immersive training is the inclusion of coaching and consulting. This isn’t just a one-off training session; it’s an ongoing journey. Participants receive individual coaching as part of the programme, allowing them to delve deeper into their specific challenges and receive tailored guidance.

  • Group Learning: The collective experience of the group enhances understanding and fosters a sense of community. Participants learn from each other’s successes and setbacks.
  • Individual Support: The additional coaching ensures that everyone has the opportunity to address their unique challenges, making the learning experience more personalised and impactful.

Conclusion

In my view, the shift from traditional training to immersive learning is essential for developing the capabilities that today’s organisations need. By connecting theory to practice and fostering an environment of continuous feedback and support, we empower individuals to thrive in their roles.

The question is how does the immersive learning experience change the game in terms of entry-level capabilities? I think it really connects the skills that people actually need to the job that they’re doing. Because normally in a two-day training class, we’re teaching a lot of theory, right? It’s actually very difficult to connect that to people’s real world.

Um, and we perhaps use ways to connect it to something that they can then connect to the real world. Um, but it doesn’t, it’s still single loop learning, right? They’re still absorbing the content and then they have to go figure it out for themselves. Whereas the immersive learning programme allows us to teach a small amount of content, a small amount of theory, and then they get seven days, five, six days a week to go figure out how do I do some of this inside of my organisation? What’s the difficulties that we run into? What’s the roadblocks that we hit? What’s the questions that we get asked by other people in our organisation?

And then come back, closing that feedback loop, right? Making learning an empirical process and have that double loop learning where they’re then able to, um, have a conversation with the group, figure out how do we solve some of those problems? How do we answer some of those questions? How do we change some stubborn ideas, right? Some folks have, have this is the way I’ve always done things. Why should I listen to you and do it a different way?

Um, and you can then start coming back around. And that’s also why we include additional coaching and consulting as well as part of our training class. Everybody just gets that. So not only do you get in an immersive class and get that group double loop learning, but you also get individual learning as well, where they can come back and get additional coaching as part of that programme.
