Discipline versus motivation?

A Crucial Agile Debate

Today, I will share my perspective on a topic that’s always been close to my heart, and I want to talk a little about the differences between a popular topic of debate: Discipline vs Motivation.

Which one takes the upper hand when it comes to successful Agile transformation ?  Let’s find out. 😎

And if you’re an Agile and Scrum enthusiast like me, you’ll understand why this matters so much. 🎯

Understanding Motivation and Discipline

In my view, motivation is the spark that sets the Agile transformation journey in motion.  Motivation is what gets you to do something, like deciding to embark on a journey - that’s the motivation.

It’s the force that encourages you to take up the challenge - the ‘why’ behind initiating something.  Motivation drives us to start and maintain progress on a project or transformation.  Motivation is the fuel that keeps the Agile engine running. 🚀

On the flip side, discipline is the work ethic that powers you through.  In other words, it’s the nuts and bolts of the transformation process.  It’s your work ethic for actually doing the work – the meticulous ‘how’ behind achieving tasks and milestones.

Discipline is what keeps us true to Scrum values like commitment, courage, focus, openness, and respect.  Discipline ensures that we stay on the Agile path, even when the road gets bumpy. 🛠️

Blend of Both: Discipline and Motivation in Agile

In an Agile environment, motivation excites the team about adopting Scrum principles and working towards a common goal.

Discipline, however, is the quiet, consistent force that ensures the team sticks to Scrum ceremonies, respects the process, and continuously improves.  It makes us reliable and committed, even when faced with challenging sprints or complex backlogs. 🗓️

So, in the final analysis, discipline and motivation aren’t opposing forces - they’re two sides of the same coin.  Successful Agile and Scrum adoption needs motivation to begin the journey and discipline to see it through to the end. 🏁

Motivation is getting you to do, like deciding to do it. That’s the motivation.

And then discipline is how you do it. That’s the way I think about those two things.

Motivation is starting something, maintaining your progress on something.

And then discipline is your work ethic for actually doing the work.
